Rebel groups say heavy fighting has continued in Syria despite a statement by UN/Arab League Peace Envoy Kofi Annan that President Assad had agreed to immediately start pulling back his forces. Meanwhile, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross has begun a mission to Syria to oversee the implementation of a daily two-hour ceasefire - one of the conditions of the Annan plan.
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says he has no intention of standing down from office despite the country's highest court saying his rival, Sir Michael Somare, is the country's legitimate Prime Minister. The country's Governor-General has so far not intervened in the crisis.
